Careers at Cummings

Property Accounting Manager

About the Role:
Are you a skilled accounting professional who thrives at the intersection of finance and operations? Cummings Properties, one of the nation’s most respected and financially stable commercial real estate companies, is seeking a detail-oriented and strategic Property Accounting Manager to join our accounting team and take ownership of the financial operations of our more than 11 million square foot commercial real estate portfolio.

This role extends beyond traditional accounting, requiring both a technical knowledge of commercial buildings and a deep understanding of property-specific operational factors—such as metering, utilities, solid waste management, and expense allocations—that affect financial performance and tenant billing. The ideal candidate will pair strong accounting acumen with a property-level operational perspective to ensure accurate reporting, precise tenant invoicing, and the overall financial and operational health of the portfolio. This is a full-time, in-office position, not a remote or hybrid.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of each property’s operational and financial characteristics.
  • Track and analyze utility usage and charges, identify anomalies, and proactively address irregularities.
  • Audit tenant billing to ensure accuracy and compliance with lease terms.
  • Partner with property management and maintenance teams on client-related and operational accounting matters.
  • Review accounts receivable and tenant ledgers, ensuring timely collections.
  • Lead financial and operational improvements and strengthen internal controls in collaboration with cross-functional teams.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least three years in a managerial role.
  • Experience in commercial real estate strongly preferred.
  • Expertise in property-level accounting, billing, and reconciliations.
  • Superior accuracy and critical thinking skills.
  • Align operations details to financial outcomes.
  • Proficiency with real estate accounting software (MRI is preferred), as well as Excel.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Current or near-term residence in the north shore Boston area.
