News from the life sciences community north of Boston
September 2021
Despite the many challenges faced by all, the life sciences industry continues to excel. Record-breaking rates of fundraising, rapid expansion of lab space, and job growth are the key themes of the recently released MassBio 2021 Industry Snapshot.
The report indicates Woburn and Beverly (both "Platinum BioReady" communities) are well-represented with large numbers of MassBio life sciences members.

MassBio also highlights the future challenge of finding enough talent to meet anticipated need for up to 40,000 net-new employees anticipated in the region by 2024.

A new 23,000-square-foot lab and office facility was recently designed and constructed by Cummings' in-house team for Absorption Systems (12 Cabot Road, Woburn). The company is a leading scientific, non-clinical CRO that provides pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical device companies and regulatory agencies with research and testing for small molecules, cell and gene therapies, ocular, and medical device products. The project was overseen by Benjamin Bronfin, senior director of operations.
Exciting life sciences updates are in the works at our Dunham Ridge campus in Beverly. In the meantime, we are delighted to announce the signing of a lease for the second North Shore location of FRANK restaurant. Those who follow celebrity chefs will recognize Frank McClelland of Boston's legendary L'Espalier restaurant. One of the earliest pioneers of the farm-to-table trend, McClellan expects to open his Dunham Ridge location and headquarters at 48 Dunham Ridge by January.
Azurity Pharmaceuticals (8 Cabot Road, Woburn) recently announced plans to acquire and merge with Arbor Pharmaceuticals. As reported in Boston Business Journal, the new firm will focus on patients with underserved conditions in the cardiovascular, central nervous system, endocrinological, gastrointestinal, and institutional markets.
"The combination of the two companies, each steeped in rich legacies, will create a one-of-a-kind company leveraging increased scale and diversification, a breadth of dosage forms, integrated capabilities, and expanded market presence to better serve our patients' needs."

Folia Materials (390 West Cummings Park, Woburn) was recently featured in The Boston Globe by "Innovation Economy" reporter Scott Kirsner. Folia has developed silver-coated face masks with anti-viral properties. The technology has other applications as well, such as water filtration. Folia founders Jonathan Levine, Ph.D. and Theresa Dankovich, Ph.D., are seen here in their Woburn lab.

North Shore InnoVentures Growing Blue Economy
North Shore InnoVentures (NSIV) is among the local partners in UMass Amherst's plan to build and implement a sustainable and resilient "blue economy" ecosystem on the North Shore.
"Our goal is to help startups in the 'BlueTech' innovation space by providing a similar model to our existing incubator program for both life sciences and cleantech," said Chris Ilsley, president and CEO of NSIV. "For BlueTech startups, this might include a package of tangible assets, such as access to docks, vessels, and wet lab space, along with intangible resources, including guidance from marine law experts, business development, and other business services."

This effort will build on MetroNorth's growing strengths and create economic growth while preserving the health of the ocean. NSIV is already working with various local and statewide partners, and plans to develop a pipeline of startups and ideas. These activities will contribute to the creation of a North Shore Innovation ecosystem attracting overseas, institutional, and corporate interests to the region.

To get involved in NSIV's BlueTech efforts, please contact 978-867-0600.

Sneak Peek: Medford
To meet the demand for additional lab space in the Boston area, Cummings has proposed a two-story building addition at 200 Boston Avenue, just north of the soon-to-be-complete Green Line Extension. Conceived with the support of the Medford economic development office, the project features 39,000 GSF of lab-ready space on two upper levels and 2,000 GSF of amenity space on the ground floor. An additional parking level at the south end of the site is screened with a solar support structure.
Existing clients or non-client readers can support the growth of fellow scientists or entrepreneurs, and earn a significant bonus, by referring a new leasing client to Cummings. In addition to lab and office suites, the 11 million-square-foot very local Cummings portfolio includes flex, medical, retail, and R&D space.
Our client referral program offers a bonus of $1 per square foot, with a minimum bonus of $1,000. Contact your account manager or visit our website to learn more or share a referral.
Stunning drone footage of the Dunham Ridge campus is featured in a recently created two-minute video. The REview, a new video platform for the CRE industry, noted that the piece does a great job promoting this unique property with the rare use of voice-over, which viewers may recognize as that of Cummings Properties founder Bill Cummings.
A beautiful new footbridge now connects the Dunham Ridge campus to scenic walking trails surrounding Norwood Pond. Leasing clients, campus visitors, and the community are invited to take advantage of this wonderful resource and bridge to "Dunham Island."
A resident of Elliott Landing condominiums, adjacent to Cummings Center, shared this photo of the new 32,000-square-feet Beverly Police station, built on the site of a $2 million land gift made by Cummings. Gloucester Daily Times featured a video tour of the facility with Chief John Lacheur.
