PerkinElmer Expands its Detection Systems Division at Cummings Facility

Woburn, MA
- PerkinElmer Detection Systems reportedly extended its lease and expanded to 78,200 square feet of office and production space at 10 Commerce Way, Woburn. The expansion is said to accommodate increased production demands from the events of September 11. According to company officials, the property, owned, leased and managed by Cummings Properties of Woburn, is now fully leased.

Micheal Meshay, Detection Systems Division president, noted, "The active role that Cummings Properties played in assisting us with our new production and office space requirements made it extremely easy to expand our operation at 10 Commerce Way."

PerkinElmer Detection Systems is reportedly the leading supplier of high performance x-ray inspection systems serving the security market. PerkinElmer also has other business units involved in the lifesciences, optoelectronics and fluid sciences industries. The Commerce Way operation manufactures security and inspection instruments, mainly for airport, transportation and building security industries.

Currently, PerkinElmer claims more than 17,000 detection systems in operation worldwide, screening for explosives, firearms, contraband and drugs. Products built in Woburn, such as automated x-ray screening systems and metal detectors are reportedly shipped and installed internationally.

Steve Drohosky, Cummings Properties operations manager, worked with Meshay to structure the expansion and extension. "We are pleased to accommodate Detection Systems' recent growth and are excited that PerkinElmer decided to extend and expand its solid business relationship with Cummings Properties," Drohosky said. William Bailey of Spaulding & Slye Colliers represented PerkinElmer in the expansion and extension.

Detection Systems reportedly expects to hire an additional 100 to 200 people at the Commerce Way facility. PerkinElmer's announced sale of Detection Systems to L-3 Communications is not expected to adversely impact the group at 10 Commerce Way.

Cummings Properties, a locally owned real estate development firm, owns, leases and manages more than eight million square feet of first class commercial space in 10 communities north of Boston.
