Predix launches trials for memory and cognition disorders

Predix Pharmaceuticals Inc. in Woburn has launched a number of early stage clinical trials for its second compound -- a potential treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

The substance -- PRX-03140 -- is also considered a possible treatment of other memory and cognition disorders.

Predix say the substance has shown some positive activity in early animal trials. The Phase I trials, held to test a compound's safety, could include as many as 40 healthy volunteers. A second study could begin by mid-2005.

Predix's lead compound is a potential treatment for anxiety and depression and is expected to enter midstage clinical trials early next year. Phase II trials test a drug's safety and effectiveness on a larger scale.

A third compound, intended to treat pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary fibrosis, is intended to reach human clinical trials by mid-2005.

Predix is developing drugs using computer modeling and plans to keep the patents and license possible drugs to larger pharmaceutical companies for manufacturing and sale.

The company launched in Israel in 2000 and came to Massachusetts in 2002.
