Predix wins FDA
nod for early drug trials Startup Predix Pharmaceuticals Inc. of Woburn has won FDA approval to launch a Phase I clinical trial for a compound that can potentially treat anxiety, attention deficit disorder and other psychiatric conditions. The company plans to conduct two Phase I trials for the compound -- dubbed PRX-00023 -- to evaluate safety and effectiveness. More than 40 healthy volunteers are expected to be enrolled by mid-year. Predix developed its first drug candidate from models of GPCR, or G-protein-coupled receptor drugs, a class of drug that interacts with a type of protein found in thousands of forms throughout the body. Predix's business model is to develop ways to discover drugs using computers, keep the patents, then license possible drugs to larger pharmaceutical companies for manufacturing and sale. Formed in Israel in 2000 and in Massachusetts since 2002, Predix in August merged with Physiome Sciences of Princeton, N.J. The deal helped Predix gain technology to develop a drug class that will treat heart rhythm abnormalities. Predix has two other
programs in preclinical program and four programs in preliminary development.
