OmniSonics granted trio of patents for OmniWave technology

Wilmington-based OmniSonics Medical Technologies Inc. has recently been granted three U.S. patents covering its OmniWave technology platform.

U.S. Patent No. 6,695,782, titled “Ultrasonic Probe Device With Rapid Attachment and Detachment Means,” covers an ultrasonic medical device having a quick attachment and detachment system and methods for using the ultrasonic medical device to remove occlusions.

Patent No. 6,695,781, entitled “Ultrasonic Medical Device for Tissue Remodeling,” covers an ultrasonic medical device for tissue remodeling and methods for using the ultrasonic medical device, and patent No. 6,679,873, titled “Method for Using a Steerable Catheter Device,” covers methods for using steerable catheter devices.

OmniSonics says it has also applied for corresponding international patents to cover each of the U.S. patents.

The OmniWave Technology platform is the technical basis of the company’s Resolution System, which is designed to resolve occlusions that occur in hemodialysis access grafts and as a result of coronary artery disease, deep vein thrombosis and peripheral artery disease.

The device, consisting of a thin, titanium wire that is placed into a clogged artery or vein, delivers low power, acoustic energy in all directions to resolve blood clots into minute particles approximately the size of red blood cells.

“The three patents, issued during the first quarter of 2004, strengthen the patent portfolio for the OmniWave Technology platform,” said Robert A. Rabiner, president and chief executive officer of OmniSonics, in a statement. “These patents cover key features and methods of our technology, particularly the introduction of our ultrasonic devices into patients using minimally invasive procedures. Our growing patent portfolio demonstrates our commitment to leadership in the markets we intend to serve.”
